Utterance

Utterance is a roguelike deckbuilder set inside the Egyptian afterlife. Your deck is a scroll — utterances chosen for your funeral, words that are instructions to reality. Cross twelve hours of the Duat toward the Hall of Two Truths. Every card you play is spoken aloud. Every transgression is written in the heart. The scale does not lie.

Who makes Utterance, and how

Utterance is a solo project. I designed and built the game with AI assistance, the architecture and design decisions are mine. My daughter, who recently graduated with a degree in Ancient Civilizations, shaped the whole concept — a deck builder grounded in the real Book of the Dead. The gates you face come from Spell 144, the Weight system from the 42 Negative Confessions, the twelve hours from the Amduat.

The illustrations and music are AI-generated, under my art direction and a written style bible. The narration is performed by an AI voice from 11 labs; deep, menacing, somewhere between Darth Vader and a construct of the gods, which is exactly what the Duat calls for. I know some players choose not to buy games made this way, and I respect that — it's why I'm telling you up front. Without these tools, this game would not exist: there was never a version of this where I could fund an art team. There was only this version or nothing. 

Everything else — mechanics, rules text, narrator script, art concepts, boss fights — came from my lifetime passion for games from Path of Exile to Hearthstone.  I hope the game speaks for itself.  If my AI use isn't a problem I'd love to have you beta test the game with me. Thanks for playing.

Streamers: the game includes Twitch integration defaulted at key decision points, or with the click of a button as often or as little as you want. You're given total control to engage chat, speed up or slow down voting as much or as little as it fits your channel's vibe. The feature is called The Mortuary Cult Speaks, because the living have always sustained the dead by speaking their name.
